Player Spotlight: An Inspiring Interview with Trey Ray
We are excited to share an inspiring interview featuring Trey Ray, one of the talented athletes who plays basketball through Lanham Christian School’s high school sports program for homeschoolers. The interview was conducted by The Player Spotlight host, Tyler Roland, at Blackburn Giovanis, where Trey opened up about his athletic achievements, college recruiting journey, and his entrepreneurial spirit.

On the Court: A Championship Mindset
Trey is heading into his senior year with big goals—to win more championships and continue showcasing his skills to college recruiters. Reflecting on his successful season last year, Trey shared:
“Winning MVP in the championship game with 26 points and 8 rebounds was a huge moment. I’m looking forward to building on that and showing colleges what I can do.”
The College Recruiting Process
Trey provided insight into his college recruiting experience, sharing how much he has learned about balancing basketball with academics and preparing for life beyond high school:
“I thought it was all about playing, but there’s so much more. The paperwork, school visits—it’s been an eye-opener.”
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Reselling Shoes
Beyond basketball, Trey has turned his passion for sneakers into a profitable side business by reselling rare shoes. This entrepreneurial venture has taught him valuable life skills and provided financial independence:
“After Kobe Bryant passed, the value of his shoes went up. I realized I had an opportunity to start something. It’s helped me financially and allowed me to get shoes I’ve always wanted.”
A Well-Rounded Student-Athlete
Trey isn’t just an exceptional athlete; he’s also an outstanding student. With a 3.7 GPA, Trey is taking unique classes like American Sign Language (ASL) to set himself apart:
“ASL sets me apart on my college resume. It’s also bilingual, which opens doors to more opportunities down the road.”
During the interview, Trey even demonstrated a few basketball-related ASL signs—a unique and impressive skill!
Fun Facts About Trey
Trey shared some personal fun facts, including his ambidextrous abilities. While he shoots left-handed in basketball, he throws right-handed in football. He also enjoys trying new activities like golfing and spending time with his dog:
“My motto is to try new things. You never know what you’ll love until you try it.”

Trey concluded the interview with heartfelt thanks to his parents, brother, and family members for their constant support throughout his journey:
“To my parents, my brother, and everyone checking in on my mental health—I appreciate and love you all.”
